Legal hare coursing is controlled under the Greyhound Industry Act 1958 and administered by the Irish Coursing Club (ICC) and is the responsibility of the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
All greyhounds are muzzled during these coursing events.
Licences issued to the ICC under the Wildlife Acts to capture and tag hares for coursing meetings.
If, while lawfully coursing a hare, the hare is hunted or coursed in a space from which it does not have a reasonable chance of escape, this is considered an offence under Section 12 of the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 (Prohibition on Animal Cruelty).
